Some info for mailing I got on the USPS
site:
What I learned through the USPS site @
http://pe.usps.gov/text/pub51/welcome.htm
Items 4#'s and less--it is cheaper to send
"Letter Post". (This is any item, not just for letters as
it might sound.) For 4#'s to Romania (rate #5) it is $15.75
The maximum length of piece is 24", max. length +ht+thickness
is 36" total.
Items over 4#'s--best to ship by either
"airmail" parcel post or "economy" parcel post (we are rate #7). The difference is one goes by
surface and the other air; making a big difference in time it is
received; by air it takes 10 days to 4 weeks. Airmail for
10#'s is $44.55 and $33.75 for economy (takes up to 2 months
to receive)
Packaging: Using
either method,
Senders must seal their own parcels. Wax,
gummed-paper tape, nails, screws, wire, metal bands, or other
materials may be used to seal parcels. The seal must be
sufficient to allow detection of
tampering.
Every parcel must be securely and
substantially packed. In packing, the sender must consider the
nature of the contents, the climate, the length of the journey,
and
the numerous handlings involved in the
conveyance of international mail. (the tighter it is packed the
better for nothing to shake loose.)
If using
"airmail", you
need to write "Airmail" on front and back of piece.
(Possible the post office will stamp that on.)
Types of
Containers
Ordinary paperboard containers (a shirt
box)are not acceptable. Parcels must be packed in one of the
following:
a. Canvas or similar material.
b. Double-faced corrugated or solid
(minimum 275-pound test) fiber boxes or cases.
Be creative in listing items as not to
promote theft, i.e. printed paper material ( in place of
patterns), sewing thread (instead of embroidery)
etc.
